Nephew & Friends Scenario

By:  Skip Gochenour

You are two days post-op from a gall bladder operation.  You and your spouse are awakened at 2:30 am to find two males in their mid-teens in your bedroom.  One is armed with a Ruger .22 auto pistol.  The other is armed with a 1911 Gov't. Model.  The one with the Gov't Model is unknown to you.  He is wearing gloves.  The one with the Ruger is the adopted son of your brother.  He is bare handed.  He has been in your house several times a month since he was an infant. Though only 16 years of age, he recently left the home of your brother and moved into the residence of a middle-aged woman with several teenage daughters.  Your brother and his spouse are very distressed over the boy's departure and are trying to persuade him to return home.

Your nephew tells you they are only there for money and mean no harm.  He produces a roll of duct tape and says that he must use it to bind both of you.  He also says that your spouse must go with his accomplice to assist in locating valuables.

In the nightstand drawer, next to you, is a Sig P-239 in .357 Sig.  The pistol is fully loaded with a round chambered.  There is a charged spare magazine next to the pistol.

Analyze your circumstance, state your situation, develop and execute your plan.

Nephew & Friends Response

The gloves on the unknown teen bothers me, if he is not leaving prints, he is not leaving witnesses. I would feign compliance and go for my weapon as soon as possible, shooting the unknown assailant to the ground. The adopted nephew would have a chance to drop weapon and live, if he did not comply immediately or made offensive movements he would be shot. At that point, reload weapon, call police and remain alert for other intruders until police arrive.
