The Sunday Church Scenario

By:  Mark Henry

You, your wife and three children (two boys ages seven and eight and one girl age 13) are at late church on Sunday evening.  There are about fifty people in an auditorium, which seats about 200 people.  Because this is a close-knit group, everyone is gathered towards the front of the sanctuary with the pews being quite full.  Your family is sitting together for this service. Your family is seated on the left hand side of the sanctuary as you face the front of the church.  You are seated in the pew along the center aisle, as is your custom.  Looking to your left in the following order is your daughter, two boys then your wife. There are no people seated behind you.

At the front of the church are exits on each side before the stairs leading to the alter.  Leading up to the elevated alter area are five large wide steps. Behind the choir area on each side of the elevated alter are two exits.  There are exits at the back of the church.

About 10 minutes into the service, a loud angry voice is heard from the back of the church. The voice is announcing this is a hold up.  He wants all of the money.   You turn around to see a single male about six foot tall with a shotgun standing there.  His face is covered with a ski mask. He yells at you to turn around.  You comply.

The ushers are directed by the man to pass the collection plate through out the congregation to collect all the money everyone has.

No one in you church knows of you caring a concealed weapon for which you have all the appropriate permits. There are no legal prohibitions for caring a weapon in church. On your strong side is a Colt Commander in 9mm loaded with Cor-Bon Glazier Safety Slugs. You have cell phone, which is turned off, folding knife, Steamline flash light and a loaded spare magazines on your person.

The Sunday Church Response

My actions for this, since I am seated on the left hand side center aisle, I can't make my movement to sudden or noticeable because I'll be the first thing this guy sees.  I wait until the ushers move to collect the money, then I'd start to cough violently.  This would mask my movement for the Colt Commander.  When the ushers are all moving, I'd cough a bit more and fall to the ground but in my fall, I'd rotate
onto my left (Right strong side) and send few quick aimed shots.  In a sudden despair, people will begin to duck so if he does let off a round, the lead shot will be deflected by those thick wooden pews. After his first shot, I'd pop back out and send a few more shots till I push him into cover then I'd begin to move in a leap frog fashion towards him, firing while I move. I'd use the flash light and toss it close by him but forcing him to turn away from me, hopefully giving me enough time to take him by surprise by either putting two in his chest, or holding him gun point. (All this is under the assumption this guy is just another crook and has a pump action shot gun with a modified choke or a full choke.  If he had a semi-auto shotgun with a mod-full choke or a full choke, then I'd have to re-state my actions.)

My reason for taking this action would be, because I detest the fact that more than once that the criminal goes free and the victim if forced to look like a coward or is left feeling violated by the very system that is supposed to protect those who are the victim, and serve justice to those who is due to.
