The Parking Lot Incident

By:  Mark Henry

After work, you pick up your wife and head to the local mall for some needed items.  After exiting the local big box store, you walk to your car. On your weak side, you are carrying some small bags.  As you and your wife are approaching the car, you see a 5 foot 10 inch male about 200 pounds yelling at a small female.  Her size is estimated 5 foot 2 inches and 120 pounds.  As you continue toward your car, the yelling gets louder with more aggressive gestures by the male.  Suddenly, the male strikes the female twice in the face with his closed fist.  She falls to the ground with blood flowing down her face. The male continues to yell as he stands over her.  Your wife, at your side, lets out a small gasp.

You yell at the guy to knock it off and to leave the female alone.  The male turns and locks eyes with you.  You realize by his posture that you are now the focus of his rage.  The female is still on the ground.

You are legally permitted to carry a concealed weapon in this jurisdiction. You have a Colt 1911 9mm. Combat Commander in a Kramer #2 IWB holster on your strong side.  Fox OC spray, a Spyderco Native and a Samsung A650 cell phone are also with you in their usual positions.

State what action you would take and why.

The Parking Lot Response

Keeping yourself between him and your wife and create some distance.  It might be a good time to have your wife call 911 if she has a phone or if she can get to yours.  Time has past and the bags should be dropped and in your support hand the OC should be out and should be used at once.  If the attack keeps on, time to go to the 1911 and order him to the ground.  If that fails, keep creating distance by keeping cars between you and him until all options are exhausted and you are forced to use lethal force.

I would hand off the phone to my wife and have her call the police while I keep her behind me so the man cannot get to her.  I would hand over the packages if possible.  If not, I would drop them on the ground as I get my OC out.  I would attempt to keep him busy (talking, moving, whatever) till the cops show up or he moves off.  My handgun would not be presented unless he draws a weapon of his own.
