Tactical
Scenario: 08-2005
It
is 11:00 PM and you are on I-40 driving west to visit your elderly parents who
live in Orange County, CA. You have
been driving since noon and when you crossed the state line near Needles, CA.,
you stopped to purchase gas and buy a large cup of coffee. An hour later, you had an urgent need to
find a rest room. Fortunately, you come
upon a rest area and although a sign warns, “Service Area Attendants Available
Only Between 8:00 AM-5:00PM”, the need to use the rest room is overwhelming and
you pull your Ford Expedition into the parking area. As you park your SUV, you noticed another vehicle about 10 yards
away with the drivers seat reclined and an individual apparently asleep. About 10 yards on the other side of the
sleeping driver is an older, dilapidated vehicle which appears to be occupied
by 2 individuals. Since strangers are
in the area, you verify that your safety equipment consisting of a S&W
Model 642 loaded with Federal 125 grain Nyclad +P ammo is secured in your
Kramer IWB#2 holster and that your Rusty Sherrick flashlight carrier contains
your Surefire 6P light. With 1 Bianchi
Speed Strip containing 6 extra rounds in your right front pocket and your
Strider PT folder clipped to your left front pocket, you lock your SUV and head
for the men’s room.
You are using a urinal next to a row of sinks as you enjoy
“the pause that refreshes”. Suddenly
the rest room door opens and 2 urban youth enter. Both appear to be in their late teens and while the smaller of
the 2 stands beside the door, a larger, heavily muscled youth moves to the sink
beside you and begins to wash his hands.
You finish using the urinal and begin to move behind him to get to a
sink when he suddenly turns around and faces you saying, “Give it up,
motherf____r”. You notice that the
smaller man beside the door has not moved and you see that the man confronting
you by the sink has nothing in his hands.
State what action you would take and why.
The Rest Stop Response

Don't stop at a bathroom on the
highway to urinate, urinate by the side of the road. Don't place yourself at risk in a high risk area. Avoid a problem and you won't have a
problem.
