“The
Alley Scenario”
By: Phil
Lomastri
It is 10:30 PM and a
thunderstorm is approaching the city as you leave the apartment of your
daughter and son-in-law. They live in a
recently restored second floor apartment that was once in a section of the city
known for drug dealing, prostitution and high crime. The city has undertaken a massive urban renewal program and is
converting this area to up-scale apartments and townhouses with trendy shops
and restaurants that appeal to “yuppie” couples without children. Although the urban renewal program is
underway, occasional homeless individuals and urban predators still frequent
the area. You have voiced your concerns
to your daughter but she and her husband seem oblivious to the threats to their
safety.
Departing the building,
you see no pedestrians on the street and only a few cars in the distance. Your Acura MDX SUV is parked in an
unattended lot on the next street over.
With a light rain falling and occasional thunder and lightning, you
decide to take a shortcut through an unlit alley to get to your vehicle
quicker. As you left their building,
you moved your Kahr PM-9 pistol loaded with 7 rounds of Remington 147 grain
BJHP ammunition from your Ken Null ankle holster to the right-hand pocket of
your Orvis jacket. Your SureFire E2E
Executive flashlight is in your left hand and a spare loaded mag along with a
Spyderco Native folding knife is in your front left pocket. A Nokia N90 cell phone is attached to your
belt on the left side. The alley is
unlit and appears deserted.
As you pass an entrance-way
about half way down the alley, a man suddenly appears holding a large kitchen
knife in his right hand. He rapidly
moves toward you uttering words that you cannot distinguish. As you illuminate him with your SureFire,
you note that he is tall with an athletic build, shabbily dressed and appears
to be in his early 20’s. You rapidly
move off the line of force, draw your weapon & command him to stop. He continues toward you and you hear him say
the words “kill you” and “motherf_ _ _ _er”.
You shout “Stop” one more time.
At about 10 feet he raises the knife in a stabbing motion and you
quickly press the trigger of your weapon as you sight to center mass. The individual drops to the ground. You quickly insert the unused mag and look
around for an accomplice or witness.
You see nothing. The rain is
increasing and the sound of thunder is overhead. Explain what would you do and why?

I’d police up my brass,
walk to my car and drive away.

At once light up the area with
your light as you move to the nearest cover that affords you a view of the
downed subject and keep some distance and objects between you and him.
Keep your gun trained on him as you dial 911 & tell them there has been a
shooting and that police and EMS are needed. Explain your location and
stay on the line. Inform
dispatch of your clothes and your description and that you are
armed and when the officer arrives you will place the gun on the ground
and raise your hands overhead.
